Gatsby Benchmarks
The Gatsby Benchmarks is a renowned framework of eight benchmarks that define what world class careers provision in education looks like.

The Gatsby Benchmarks: The next 10 years
Ten years on from when they were first published, the Gatsby Benchmarks for good careers guidance are being implemented in over 4,700 schools and colleges across England.
A lot has changed in the past decade: technological advances, innovation in education and major shifts in the labour market. Now, to ensure the framework is fit for the future. The updates have been developed after two years of research and consultation, and have been included in the latest statutory guidance for schools and guidance for further education colleges, sixth form colleges and independent training providers (May 2025).

What are the Gatsby Benchmarks?Â
The Gatsby Benchmarks were developed on behalf of the Gatsby Foundation by Sir John Holman. They define what world class careers provision in education looks like and provide a clear framework for organising the careers provision at your school or college.
The benchmarks are enshrined in statutory guidance and as a ¹ú²úBT Leader, it is your responsibility to oversee the implementation of the benchmarks in your education setting.
The 8 Gatsby Benchmarks are:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from careers and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each student
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employeesÂ
- Experiences of workplacesÂ
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
We have two free digital products that can support you to evaluate your careers provision against the Gatsby Benchmarks, Compass and Compass+.
